About us

The East Central Chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Food Science and Technology was carved out from the NIFST South-East chapter.

The Chapter was inaugurated by the then National President of NIFST Prof. Ozo Nweke Ozo (2004-2008) in March 2005 at Abakaliki. Prof. E.C. Okoli was elected the first Chairman of the Chapter at that meeting, while Dr. Ani was elected the Secretary. The inaugural meeting was hosted by Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki and 31 members of the Institute from all parts of the Chapter area attended and voted at the meeting. To facilitate administration of the chapter and membership mobilization, the following zones were established soon after the inauguration of the chapter. These include: Abakaliki Zone, Afikpo zone, Enugu Zone, Awka Zone and Onitsha Zone. In October 2005 the young Chapter host very successfully the 29″ National conference and AGM from 11 to 13th of October with Prof E. C Okoli as the LOC Chairman and the Chairman of the Editorial Committee of the conference, Tagged “Abakaliki 2005”.

The Chapter has grown significantly over the years with membership increasing from 31 on inception to current level of over 500.

The Chapter of at today is made up of Six (6) Zones comprising of Abakaliki, Afikpo, Awka, Enugu, Nsukka and Onitsha Zones with over Nine (9) Tertiary Institutions.
