NIFST East Central Chapter Pays Courtesy Visit to COOU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kate Azuka Omenugha, Seeks Collaboration on ReFoSTS

A delegation of the Nigeria Institute of Food Science and Technology (NIFST), East Central Chapter (ECC), led by the Chapter Chairman, Apst. Peter Agbata, paid a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), Igbariam, Professor Kate Azuka Omenugha, to strengthen collaboration and discuss the hosting of the forthcoming Regional Food Science and Technology Summit (ReFoSTS).

Introduction of Delegation

The Chapter Chairman formally introduced members of the delegation to the Vice-Chancellor, highlighting their respective roles within the Chapter and their commitment to advancing food science and technology in the region. The visit underscored the longstanding relationship between NIFST ECC and the University.

Appreciation and Request for Support

In her remarks, the Head of Food Science and Technology Department, Dr. Comfort Nwagbo, expressed appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor for her continued support to the Department, particularly acknowledging the establishment and support of the Bakery unit. She, however, appealed for further consideration toward securing a permanent site for the Bakery to enhance teaching, research, and practical training.

Dr. Nwagbo also briefed the Vice-Chancellor on the forthcoming ReFoSTS and highlighted the numerous advantages of hosting the summit within the University. She noted that hosting the event would boost the institution’s visibility, foster industry–academia collaboration, attract professionals and researchers within the region, and create networking opportunities for staff and students.

Chairman’s Remarks and Keynote Invitation

In his address, Apst. Peter Agbata reminded the Vice-Chancellor of her earlier indication—while serving in an acting capacity—that she would be willing to host the ReFoSTS at the institution. He expressed confidence in the University’s capacity to successfully host the summit and formally requested that she serve as the Keynote Speaker at the event.

As a symbolic gesture, the Chapter Chairman presented the NIFST Portfolio to the Vice-Chancellor, further reinforcing the Institute’s commitment to partnership and professional engagement.

Additional Remarks

Prof. James Obiegbuna also appreciated the Vice-Chancellor for her openness and reiterated that she had earlier demonstrated readiness to host the Chapter should the ReFoSTS be brought to the institution. He emphasized that the event would further elevate the University’s profile in food science and technology.

In her response, the Vice-Chancellor thanked the delegation for the visit and for considering COOU as a potential host for the summit. She assured the team that she would meet with the University Management to deliberate on the proposals presented and communicate her decision in due course. She also requested to be duly informed ahead of time regarding the proposed role of Keynote Speaker to enable adequate preparation.

Conclusion

The meeting ended on a cordial note with mutual assurances of cooperation and a group photograph to commemorate the visit. The engagement marks another significant step in strengthening collaboration between NIFST East Central Chapter and Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University toward advancing food science education and professional development in the region.
